I'm very pleased to see Sens. Lieberman and Collins stand up for the principles that make our government great. Good science, like good government, hinges on open discussion and debate. Perhaps Soviet physicist Andrei Sakharov summed it up best in his 1975 Nobel Peace Prize lecture:
"The highly important problem involving the preservation of the environment is one of the examples in which the role of public opinion, the open society, and freedom of conscience is particularly obvious."
(Though apparently not very obvious to the Bush administration.)

When a boss withholds or changes an employee's work it is not censorship! It may be incompetence but it is not censorship! The boss is supposed to provide a quality control over what employees produce as employees. Lieberman is totally wrong and should back off the current witch hunt! This is nothing but politics at its worst. The employee does not represent himself, he represents the government. Just because Joe agrees with the individual or wants to show the White House changed the employee's position does not make Joe correct in his actions. While the employee's opinion may be correct, it is not that of the elected representative whom we have chosen to make decisions about the government's position on policy issues and scientific work performed by the government (paid for and/or performed by).
