Return to Article: Government continues to subsidize building in hurricane-prone areas

I have lived within 30 miles of the ocean in three different locations over an 11-year period. I have always had to buy homeowners insurance, and flood insurance is optional. I don't expect the government to bail me out of anything. Our family has supplies and a generator.
Some people complain their high insurance rates inland are caused by coastal area residents, but my insurance went up twice due to ice storms in Charlotte and Raleigh, both inland cities. Insurance companies are extremely rich, and they will always find some way to stay like that.

I live in southeast North Carolina, and I do have insurance in case of hurricane. In fact, my insurance has more than doubled while the co-pay has also doubled in the past few years. Luckily, my home so far has sustained little damage. Regardless, I have not received one penny of yours, or my, tax dollars.

Concerning having my hand out when disaster hits -- you bet your sweet one I will have my hand out. That is because everyone in the United States has their hand out or is asking for my money to help them recover from the loss they suffered because of the risk they took! Government should stop covering this loss and make the decisions of where to locate fall on the individual and not the country! Of course I will go anywhere because the government will cover my losses and if they do not do it fast enough to please me I will holler and holler because that is how it works!
California -- you have flood insurance and guess what -- we are paying for it not you! When you suffer the losses the country will cover them, not your premiums. Same is true for the hurricane losses because a majority of the hurricane loss is from flooding! Private insurance companies do not cover flood damage -- that is why the insurance companies are not paying the losses for New Orleans. However, New Orleans is a special case. The flooding of New Orleans was cause by the incompetence of the Army Corps of Engineers -- not a hurricane! Therefore, the country should pay for damages. The country also should get rid of the Army Corps of Engineers. At least the Corps now has admitted they were the problem! Congress -- do something about it!

To the individual living in California -- I am one of the fortunate to have insurance with a private insurer in Florida. However, a huge majority of folks living in Florida are not able to get insurance with a private insurer. They have to go with "citizens" insurance which is state-run and very expensive. Then places like Pasco County that already require most homes to have hurricane, wind, flood now require them to have sink-hole coverage. It was reported just last week on the news that homes in Pasco County are way out of price range from most when you add in the outrageous price of all the insurance. Now three days ago, a report indicated that a lot of insurers are going to start dropping anyone who owns a house built before 1995. Of course, we don't have to believe everything the media prints or states. But, let's think about this. That is a huge majority of homes. Ironically, my home was built in 1979. I am not anywhere near a coast line (i.e., more than 40 miles inland). However, I risk every day the threat of having my insurance dropped. I have to wonder though how my home has managed to stand since 1979. Once I have to join others in paying the $10,000-plus rates per year on insurance, I will no longer be a Florida resident.

How come we hear no outcry when the government assists in re-building after a disaster in other parts of the country (California and the Western United States, for earthquakes, wildfires and mudslides; Midwest and Northern United States for flooding; Central United States tornadoes; and hurricanes in the Northeast)? Funny how there's a problem only if it happens to be a Southern state.
I live in a hurricane area and I carry homeowners, flood and hurricane insurance. How arrogant of you to state that those of us who live in hurricane areas do not carry the appropriate insurance. Apparently, you take Hollywood's view of the South (poor and stupid) or you are just plain ignorant. I daresay that, proportionately speaking, there are more uninsured homes and household goods in the state of California, especially considering the proportion of illegal aliens in your state. And I bet you'll have the same Hollywood type view when a disaster strikes your town. Do what I say, not what I do.

I live in California. We live with earthquakes, wildland fires and flooding. We carry earthquake insurance, fire insurance, and flood insurance. Our insurance helps us to re-build, not the government. So why do the taxpayers have to help re-build the homes and businesses that get destroyed by hurricanes almost every year? It's time that the folks living in the hurricane areas get insurance to help them instead of spending my tax dollars.

The trouble is there is almost no where you can live that doesn't have something. I guess we should close the southeast coast from Florida all the way up to Virginia, the whole Gulf Coast, all of California, because of hurricanes, earthquakes and mudslides. Then let's close most of the Midwest, wildfires, tornados, and floods you know. Let's not forget the flooding in the northeast this year. Stupid enough to build in an area that has hurricanes? I bet you'll have your hand out when something finally comes to your town.

The federal agency I work for is in Florida. At one time, we were in what they call evacuation zone "B" (2nd area to be evacuated, if needed). We were approximately 2-3 miles from the water. But, that was not good enough. So after multiple years, management finally secured funding to allow us to move right on the water in an evacuation zone "A" area. Additionally, all important files are on the ground record and are not scanned into any system. As most folks know, the government is self-insured. So, when we do sustain damage the tax payers will be forking the bill. Why in the world is an agency permitted to do this just for a view of the water? Not only should we not subsidize building in hurricane-prone areas, but government agencies should not be permitted to be housed there either!

This absolutely is ridiculous and our Congress is approving it to buy votes and get re-elected. Why should we rebuild New Orleans in flood areas, why finance building in coastal areas that flood, why provide flood insurance to any building in a flood plain that was built after 1960? Answer: The people of the United States need to cover the loss suffered by people stupid enough to build in flood areas and hurricane areas. Stop providing flood insurance on any building built after 1960 that is in a known flood zone or a known hurricane area (Miami). That pretty much would eliminate Florida, and that is Bush country, so don't hold your breath.
