I'm not so sure Tammy is right regarding leaving your TSP in if you leave before you MRA + years - the TSP handbook indicates that if you separate before then that you must withdraw your TSP. ????????

Will someone with over 20 yrs of covered federal law enforcement but younger than 50, decide to "retire". Would he/she collect an annuity upon becoming 50? Thank you.

Rumors of buy outs and RIFs! Confusion? If a CSRS is younger than 55 and does not have 30 years of service and takes a buyout, do they have to wait to age 62 to get their reduced annuity? Is this a resignation whereas someone like me, who is older than 55 and has almost 37 years, would be considered as taking retirement?

Thank you all for your help. I did not see that Tammy was talking about leaving before retirement. To me leaving was leaving, the only difference was whether you qualified for an annuity or not.

Dear Help,
Reread the story. Tammy is talking about people who leave federal service before they are eligible to retire. You are confusing it with people who retire.

This article is about leaving the government early -- before retirement. When an employee resigns, they lose their health insurance! When an employee applies for a deferred retirement, they cannot reinstate their health insurance. The only way to keep your FEHB is to be eligible for an immediate retirement benefit.

Thanks, Tammy.
Question for you: Are the FERS annuity benefits indexed for inflation? I left civil service last year and have a ways to go until age 62.

My understanding is that the health insurance continues into retirement and the government continues to pay the same portion of the premium. You say it only continues for 18 months and the employee has to pay the premium plus 2 percent (2 percent of what?).
If you were in the health insurance program for five consecutive years before retirement you may continue in the plan after retirement! I think what you have said is very confusing for many.
