Return to Article: FEMA works to keep trailer parks temporary

I live in a FEMA trailer because my home was destroyed by Katrina. The insurance money I will get will be kept by the mortgage company. That is why a lot of these people are stuck in these trailers. We qualify for a SBA Loan but have no clue when we would get it. Some neighbors have been waiting 3 months or more. So don't go passing judgment when you don't know what really is going on. The media only spins it the way they want you to see and hear it. My husband is 74 and I am 67. This leaves us in a very precarious situation.

This was an excellent article, which should be shared more widely. It is clear from this disaster that many citizens do not have any idea of what assistance is provided from the federal government. It is also fairly clear from many discussions and articles that many of the affected individuals, particularly from New Orleans, expect the government to "take care" of them. We need more practical information in junior high and high school classes about what local, state, and federal governments are responsible for and what people are responsible for in their lives. Some of the life lessons that we once received from our parents are obviously not getting through, so we need to rethink what information needs to be provided in our school systems. Test results are important but not the only thing. We seem to have a generation that can't manage money, read, or accept responsibility. Thanks for the opportunity to comment.
