Return to Article: OPM sets personnel management goals through 2010

"The agency wants to cut the wait for 50 percent of all hiring decisions to 45 days by the end of this fiscal year and accomplish that for 90 percent of hires by 2010." Is this for the entire government or just OPM? When I was looking for employment in government I applied for several jobs. Many I never heard back from and some replied that they received my application a year after I had applied! Others offered me jobs that when I accepted, I was told the job had not been approve (why was it advertised, why did they interview). This type of number is a joke and they simply define the terms to fit what the goal says so they can get paid for performance in line with the goal!

OPM still isn't addressing the one of the greatest difficulties the federal employees face. They need to do something about the "We Know, But" problem. When federal employees approach their respective Office of Personnel with problems, they seem to have lots of excuses for not helping.
Federal workers get to experience this from the very beginning of their careers. How many of us have heard:
"We know that you qualify as the GS-5, but we decided to only fill the position at the GS-4 level even though it was posted as GS-4 and GS-5."
"We know that the training sessions you are required to attend have no relevance to your job. But ..."
"We know that the position we gave you isn't the one we posted. But ..."
"We know that injured workers are being wrongfully denied federal workers compensation. But ..."
"We know that you were promised reimbursement for college courses. But ..."
Federal workers aren't asking for special treatment. They want to be treated fairly and according to federal rules and regulations. They don't want to be jerked around and they don't want to be told that OPM doesn't want to make waves. If the Office of Personnel Management really wants to do a better job, then had they had better start doing something about the problems federal employees face every day, instead giving us a bunch of lip service.
If OPM did something about these kind of problems when they first start, federal employees would be much more content and would do better work instead of always looking for a way out.

The Working for America Act better not get any backers. It's an election year and the public is already disgusted with the Republican-led Congress.
