I've been searching for the cost of collecting a tax dollar for a while. I finally decided to look up how much money is budgeted to the IRS every year and divide it by the federal government's tax revenues. I came up with a rough number of 44 cents per $100. Lower than I thought.

I've been trying to find a factual starting place as to the cost of IRS tax collection. About 6 mo. ago I saw a figure published by the IRS saying their collection cost for 2006 was 22 cents for every dollar they collected. The above article says 53 cents per $100 for collection. An article of David Ellis, CNNMoney.com staff writer May 23, 2007: 5:46 pm edt stated a cost of 26 cents per dollar collected. I would like to know for sure what it really costs. 1/2cent per dollar it too cheap, 22 to 26 cents per dollar is too high. Glenn

I agree with the union position but statement such as Kelly's give power to the opposition. The real measure is not the cost of collections but the cost of collections relative to the amounts collected. If the IRS costs only 53 cents per $100 collected and collects only $100 that is not as good as a private company that collects $200 and charges $23 for a net revenue gain of $158 while the IRS net gain is only $99.47. Stop trying to misinform and start giving the real measures of the function are you are going to be privatized!

"... private collection agencies is intended to supplement the work of IRS employees ..." Hmmm, we can hire more employees to do the work at rate of 0.53 percent or contract the supplemental out at 24 percent. Now, I understand that we probably wouldn't be able to maintain the 0.53 percent rate. Suppose it costs 10 percent instead. Doesn't it still make sense to hire instead of to contract?

It's called "tax farming" -- all the nasty old empires did it, why not the United States?

The Selling of America? Don't look for this volume in your local library, as it's happening every day in D.C. President Shrub is bound and determined to support big business, not ours, but theirs. Who are these people? Well, some are Americans, but many aren't, just check out the passports of the UAE folks who want to run our ports. Awhile back, New York governor Pataki tried to sell the New York state highways to private interests, but was stopped, barely. Now the Treasury Department wants to privatize debt collection! I guess that if a person wants to own a piece of America he/she should emigrate overseas.

I remember several years ago when the IRS contracted some work in Pennsylvania, and the contractors where throwing tax forms and private checks into the trash. Go contractors!!!!!
