I am sick of the way that veterans are being overlooked in the job market (both civilian and government). We owe our veterans so much more. All I've heard is "support our troops". When will we start?

As a vet, with no veteran's preference, I have to say, in light of what's being required of our veterans these days and the benefits they are losing despite what they give up, you sound pretty ungrateful, Taxpayer. I'm sure any soldier who's been seriously wounded or is emotionally traumatized by his/her war experience would gladly trade places with you and your crappy benefits any day. Try thinking about what these brave men and women sacrifice everyday. Yes, they volunteer and thank God because if not them, who? You? Doubtful.

Taxpayer is obviously not a veteran and does not appreciate them. This ignoramus is not aware that service people in the military do not work 40-hour work weeks, rather it's more like 60 hours. And overtime or comp. time is non-existent. This is especially true on deployment where in addition to regular working hours, you have to stand duty or watches or whatever the chain of command wants you to do. The military may offer 30 days annual leave, but this includes weekends used. Overall being on active duty in the military is almost like a 24/7 job.

Taxpayer, No matter where you live, there is a recruiting office just down the street, feel free to go sign up for those great benefits you keep harping about. And oh, don't try to get your job back even after the minimum enlistment time, you'll find that "vets need not apply."

Taxpayer, you can express your opinions freely because the military people you mention ensure that right. Thank you for reminding us all of our cherished rights and freedoms. At least present some facts or intelligent hypotheses about compensation and productivity, or fair hiring practices. God bless our women and men in civilian service and in uniform serving far away from their loved ones to preserve our way of life. Everyone, please take a moment and give thanks for our blessings, instead of spitting venom at each other.

Not only do these guys get overpaid and underworked while in the service, they get preferential treatment to keep their hand in the cookie jar after they leave the service. There should be no vet preference. The employment preference should go to the best person qualified for the job and being a vet should not be a consideration.

Now, all they need to do is to show how many they refused to hire or how many they fired for frivolous reasons. I will bet it is a real slight uptick. This government doesn't hire vets unless it really has to. And don't worry, the MSPB and other government legal cronies will support the firing of any vet -- read their decisions on the Web and compare them to cases of non-vets. That tells the story. The Labor Department is a joke also when it comes to helping vets.
