I agree with you in principle. But you're missing one key ingredient in the equation. That fact is that no matter how hard you try in our electronic society, human beings are very adverse to consummating a deal or agreement over the airwaves.
I wish it wasn't so but it really is. That human interaction is still very important. Heck, I find myself going on trips that I wish would never take place. They take place because the customer wants them to take place. And my trips encompass many miles and time zones. And they usually provide me with the enjoyment of spending many hours talking needlessly with people "looking out for our interests" telling me why it's a waste of time.

Isn't amazing how much effort the Congress makes to contract out travel services and how little effort it makes to compel federal agencies to use teleconferencing and video conferencing over high speed Internet lines. A lot of money was spent to install electronic conference capability in thousands of federal agencies. But, federal employees are still making a monumental number of trips at taxpayer expense.
Who is going to say, "Enough already"?
