Return to Article: Ex-Army Corps officials say budget cuts imperiled flood mitigation efforts

Interesting. However, news reports have stated that the levees that broke were already complete, so the issue of funding cuts for the Army Corps of Engineers is irrelevant. In other words, even if the previous administrations (Bush, Clinton, etc., all the way back to Carter) HAD fully funded these proposed projects, New Orleans STILL would have been flooded. Of course, facts like these don't matter to the finger-pointers, and Bush-bashers, do they? I agree that the administration could have done a number of things better, but to blame this one on them is not only unfair, but just wrong.

Republicans love to call for accountability from everyone except the Bush administration. They would rather die than admit that he has bungled everything he's touched. They're too busy blaming everyone else for his mistakes and screw ups. What great role models they are - do as I say and not as I do. No wonder this country is falling apart at the seams. I guess the only people Shrub can unite are our enemies and his base. Although, I'm not sure there's any difference between those two groups.

Speaking of passing the buck. Republicans pass ALL problems on to the last democratic president. They never do anything wrong and only talk about how great they are.
Clinton did or Carter did it etc - never them. They take credit for what they want and demonize those programs that help people.
Can't wait for Grover Norquist to get on his horse about helping people. The guy is so out of it.

I wonder if President Bush in his investigation of the Hurricane Katrina relief efforts will include his administration in the investigation? I am sure he will explain why his administration and Congress targeted those large cuts in the Army Corps of Engineers budget particularly in Louisiana where the 100 year old levee system was slated for repair. Of course, we need not be reminded that the flooding in New Orleans would not have been so bad had the levees not broken down. Furthermore, in this instance I feel we DO need to play the "blame game." Hundreds of people are displaced and perhaps thousands more are dead. Rescue efforts were slowed or non-existent in some cases and the communications between the governmental organizations responsible for aiding these hurricane victims completely fell apart. Someone needs to carry the blame and I think the people of New Orleans and Gulf Port and all Americans will demand it!

Life is cheap in the USA. If as you say "A society is judged on how well it protects its most vulnerable members" legalized abortion shows how this society should be judged. How is a few thousand deaths in New Orleans any worse than the few thousand babies killed each day in the USA?
Why can't people take responsibility for themselves? You can't blame the federal government because the people of Louisiana built in a bad place then waited for someone else to make them safe.

It's not about blame, i'ts about accepting responsibility. Calling it the "blame game" is just more spin from this administration. And, Bush is going to "lead" an investigation? How scary is that! He couldn't lead hungry wolves to fresh meat. Bush supporters will never admit that this guy is not the second coming of Christ like the religious extremists try to make him out to be. Remember, the anti-Christ shows up first.

The government response to this natural disaster has been pathetic. A society is judged on how well it protects its most vulnerable members. We failed in New Orleans.
As to blame, well there is plenty to go around. But ultimately Harry Truman said it best. The buck stops at the president's desk.

If the Army Corps of Engineers has been working for 200 years to keep New Orleans afloat, why hasn't the job been completed yet? If funding has been cut since the Carter administration, why is this administration only being blamed? What about local politicians in an area long known for graft and corruption? Even if these programs weren't cut, this flooding would still have occurred. I read reports that the cuts had nothing to do with the flooding, because the levees that failed weren't even part of those projects. And why even have such a major city in an area that is so vulnerable to nature, due to its geography, that it has been a disaster waiting to happen for centuries? Now is not the time for partisan bickering, but for this country to pull together and help those in need. Enough of the blame game, and let's all work together to help the victims of this NATURAL disaster.
