nobody has mentioned how the government gives them free medicaid, wic, food stamps, even if they are illegal they still get all these benefits if they have an american child. so the government is aiding and abetting illegals its an never-ending story. stop automatic citizenship, stop providing them with medicaid, wic , food stamps why do we provide these services at tax payers expense. how do you expect them to leave they will never leave. but they do keep on coming. the government should stop bringing in sick people that are going to be on disability 6 years from now. stop the benefits

Most articles on illegal immigration in the United States -- this one included -- and most posters, ignore the "push factors" in immigration. NAFTA has pushed thousands of Mexican farmers off the land. Most of them stay in Mexico (look at the shantytowns around any Mexico city), but some come here. If we hadn't insisted that our heavily-subsidized corn growers should be given tariff-free access to the Mexican market, those farmers would still be on the land. The more Mexico is allowed to develop economically, the better for the immigration situation. The same is true for Central America. CAFTA will send many thousands more our way, all to benefit a few corporations who want to export to the small markets down there. The money spent on enforcement against illegal immigration has quadrupled in the last few years, but it will never be enough unless the push factors are dealt with. It's not a matter of being a bleeding heart: it's in the interest of all Americans to help "keep 'em down on the farm" as the old song goes.

Having the "CBP" responsible for immigration control along the border and the "ICE" responsible for "interior enforcement" is another fine example of government redundancy whose primary purpose is to give more bureaucrats a gravy job and will do nothing to address the immigration problem. Having two government agencies doing the same job will insure that they will spend more time fighting to protect their turf than actually doing their job.

Why not declare eminent domain on 1/2 mile of land on both the northern and southern borders and make them into military bases? Then the military could kill anything that enters.

Just to review...It's been almost four years since 9/11 and we're still trapped in the same lies. Lie #1: According to Presidente "Zorro" of Mexico. "Mexicans will do the jobs(in the US)that even American blacks won't do". Sounds like the 'Big Lie Technique' practiced most recently by Hitler and Mussolini and Stalin. Those of you old enough to remember, please remember, the rest of you youngsters, check with Google. To automatically assume that a person is of a specific cultural/national persuasion based solely on their physical attributes is called PREJUDICE!! So how do we deal with this problem, simple, enforce the existing immigration laws, deport ALL illegal infiltrators, punish US businesses hiring them, and promote the job prospects of low-income US citizens, who cannot find work and housing in their own country due to the globally-based corporate vision of Third World economic and sexual slavery currently tolerated by the Bush Administration. It's time to put the 19th century slogan of 'the white man's burden' to rest, as it historically referred to British domination of India, the Caribbean, etc. Let's help the rest of the world, but not indiscriminately bring it into our homes, 'cause we just don't have the room.

Dear Fed'lConsultant:
Regarding your request for advice about the delay on your Canadian brother-in-law's petition filed presumably on his behalf by your sister, I used to fix these things for agents and informants. But, today even I can't believe how difficult it is when these files go sideways. The State Department just starts over from their side rather than trying to figure out where it went wrong. You have to first get an idea of the time frame that is appropriate to your relative's type of petition and native country. Most problems are encountered when something is wrong with the documentation or someone moves. I haven't followed this thing for awhile, but it used to be that when the gov't cashed your check it wrote an "A-number" on the check--examine the canceled check for a number. Next, you should have a petition number, for instance, in the West it usually starts with WAC which refers to the Western Service Center. These numbers will help you get started. Next, find out if any milestones have been missed indicating a problem, such as initial interview, or transfer to the National Visa Center in Portsmouth, log jam at the Service Center, ect. Remember that only 5 percent of the people you talk to actually know how this works.

This country previously tried to deal with this problem by proclaiming amnesty for millions of illegal alien invaders. Proponents of this claimed that by doing so, we would give them legal status, and that would solve our immigration problem. What actually happened was that amnesty only encouraged millions of OTHERS to illegally come to the U.S. They thought that when we got fed up enough, we would again declare AMNESTY, and legitimize their presence here as well. Now we are hearing about a guest worker program, which will only serve to reward millions of additional lawbreakers.
If ILLEGAL aliens can afford to pay thousands of dollars to smugglers, then they can also afford to apply to become LEGAL immigrants, by doing things the right way, and following our laws.
For those businesses that can't exist without immigrant labor, I pose the following question: What happens when these unskilled, uneducated laborers are injured, or get older, and can no longer physically do this kind of work? Many also have large families, and are living below the poverty level. Do they go back to their countries, or go on welfare and other state and federal government programs, at the expense of the U.S. taxpayer?
I think the answer is obvious.

Skeptical,
We do have temporary visas for people to come in and work, but: 1). Some of them have numerical caps that quickly get filled, and 2) They are generally for workers who are coming on a seasonal basis, (farm labor), or apply only to skilled individuals working in areas where there abilities are in short supply.
Police officers do not have the authority to arrest illegals for simply being here illegally because that is a federal statute. Deportation is an administrative offense, not a criminal one, so that authority has to be granted by statute. An exception to the rule is if they have been trained and granted that authority by DHS.

I believe S. Glasby from PA has a sensible approach to help bring the problem under control. I further add that as long as there is poverty, especially in Mexico, and work opportunities to the North, people will do what they have to to survive. They don't see sneaking across the border as breaking the laws. To them it is the natural thing to do to improve their lives. 99.9% probably don't intend to harm the US. Our government knows that, and perhaps explains why the borders are not protected more aggressively as demanded by some individual groups at border states. By having a sensible guest worker program, we can at least have some kind of control over their whereabouts. By requiring employers that hire them foot their medical bills when needed is a good start. Requiring the guest workers pay into Social Security might be a good thing also. Now there will be those that will always argue it isn't fair for those that have to wait in line and go through proper channels to enter the country. But the difference here is that those who go through proper channels are not hungry.

I believe the guest worker program would work. If the people crossing the border are willing to pay hundreds of dollars and in some cases over a $1,000 to smugglers to dump them in the desert, they can afford to pay the processing costs to administer such a program at a number of stations erected at major crossings at the border. The Driver's License issue can be resolved by a superimposed "Guest Worker" logo over the photo identifying the person as a Guest Worker.
The health insurance costs can be covered by permits Manufacturers and Contractors would have to buy to hire these personnel.

It continues to stun me how abominable our immigrant policy and enforcement strategy is. Illegal immigrants being turned into guest workers!? That is a criminal being rewarded for criminal activity!
-

Correct me if I'm wrong but we already have a temporary work VISA that people can apply for to accomplish what this is talking about, don't we?
And yesterday I heard (sorry don't remember the source but it was talk radio) that police officers aren't supposed to arrest a known illegal unless they get special training from one of the DHS agencies - didn't hear which. Why would a police officer be prohibited from arresting an individual that they knew to be breaking a law? This just screams of "rice bowl protectionism."

I believe that illegal immigration may be the cause that topples the Republican lock on DC in the next election if they don't get it under control. This seems to be something of a positive start.
My thanks to all the agents that are battling this problem for your service and dedication.
I also have a question for anyone with knowledge of the system. I have a brother-in-law (Canadian citizen) with no criminal past of any kind that has been fighting for legal immigration for just short of a year. Any suggestions on what may be causing the problems/delays that I can tell my sister/b-i-l to look for?
Thanks

Just say NO..to so-called guest workers. All that pending provision of the pending immigration legislation would do is to legitimize illegal infiltration. Bush and his crony President 'Zorro' of Mexico have been trying to help themselves to our tax dollars for some time now. Besides the obvious strengthening of the borders, we need to aggresively prosecute ALL US businesses employing illegals. NO jobs, no illegals. Can we stop all illegal infiltration, no, should we try, of course! Write/call/e-mail your elected reps re this pending travesty. PS, don't forget that guest workers will then be legally eligible for benefits!
