Your husband lost his wallet and needs a new Social Security Card? I don't remember anyone ever asking me for my card, maybe my number. What else was in his wallet, his childhood Naturalization Certificate? Your marriage license? Maybe if we had five people like Denmark, we could drop everything and clean-up your husband's life.

My boyfriend had his wallet stolen. To get a new Social Security card he had to show he is a citizen. After moving here from Denmark when he was 8 months yng w/his family and living here for over 51 yrs we find out that the state has no record of him. He has paid taxes every year and had a run in with the law (driving violations) before he was 20. I go online and get an appointment for 10:45 for our Homeland Security (Immigration Dept.)...I fugure we would be seen by 11:15ish.. Wellll, we did not get to meet with the Immigration Officer until after 12:30. This was nothing new to others there (workers and customers). I could not get past why we had to make an appointment. He gave us a "RED" card to come to the front of the line when we had to go back the following wk.. I have a feeling this has just begun. Out of 8 windows they had 2 open. Now I know why people had and were eating their lunch and reading books. They took checks and cash but no credit cards..

I recently was using the State Department website for the same purpose-- to find out the process for applying for a passport. There I found clear instructions that, whether applying at a post office or State Department location, an appointment is required. Apparently others did as well, as you refer to the fact that there were others with appointments who were taken ahead of you. It's possible you just missed the instructions.

Tom Shoop went to the wrong Post Office, apparently. Here in St. Louis, over the years I've processed initial, renewal, and replacement applications at three different postal stations, and all you normally have to do is get in the regular line, give them your form, and that's it. I don't know if they take credit cards for Passport Applications, or not, though - since the money is going to the State Department, and not the PO, it would seem likely they don't - still, if the sign on their wall indicated they do take plastic, perhaps a word with the Postmaster at that station would have straightened things out.
Never hesitate to ask for the Postmaster if you think the clerks aren't doing things right - usually, your problem gets straightened out quickly and easily that way (with one notable exception in my case - I think the Postmaster at that particular station was probably the cause of most of the procedural problems I encountered there over the course of a few years).
