Much to my husband's surprise, I have to admit that "shall not be infringed" means just that. Whether the 1st or 2nd amendment, "shall not be infringed" means just that. Which one of the other amendments guaranteeing your personal freedoms do you want to give up, too?

There have always been limits on "free speech", for the good of society. As a learned Supreme Court justice once said, free speech does not give you the right to yell "fire" in a crowded theater. Nor does it legalize child pornography, which is still against the law, thank God! Do you really believe in "anything goes" when it comes to the First Amendment? If you do, I'm sure that you and the guys at the North American Man Boy Love Association (NAMBLA) would get along just fine!

To confused,
The Second Amendment does not expressly single out for omission the right to own assault weapons, tanks, rocket launchers, or nuclear weapons either. So with your thought process all citizens should be able to own any weapon they want.

"I am strongly committed to ensuring the right of free speech," Gonzales said. "But obscene materials are not protected by the First Amendment, and I am committed to prosecuting these crimes aggressively."
(from www.house.gov/Constitution/Amend.html) "Article [I] - Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceable to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
OK - I'm confused. Where in the First Amendment (above) is obscene material expressly singled out as omitted from protection? The First Amendment is there to protect ALL speech, not just what we want to hear or politicians want us to hear. The problem with free speech is that it's just that, and people are free to say things we don't like.
