Return to Article: Program assessments factor into Bush plan to trim deficit

I just attended the GOVEXEC breakfast session with Mr. Walker who was discussing the financial crisis we are facing with these huge deficits and commitments. Thank you GOVEXEC for a most interesting discussion.
And than I read this article with quotes from OMB about trimming.
There is just no acknowledgement by this administration that we currently have more commitments and debt than the entire worth of the United States and we continue to borrow against our future. The question I had for Mr. Walker this morning which I didn't ask was whether GAO has analyzed how soon we reach the breaking point- how soon does the debt servicing become so great that the United States, like many third world countries have in the past, goes "bankrupt."

See who gains from this deficit-mongering: GAO, which gets more work (some non-partisan group (i.e. not political hack haven OMB) will have to study what programs aren't working, and propose cuts. Consultants, who invent "public value metrics" and other hoo-ha to "rate programs," getting rich in the process. And right-wing think-tanks, who publish "studies" that justify scrapping any program that doesn't help the wealthy.
The "deficit crisis" is just like Social Security and Iraq: A manufactured crisis to help Bush do what he wants, which is to cut the heck out of government. The sad thing is that GAO, consultants, back him up, to protect their own bottom line. Who loses? We, the people.
