Return to Article: Bush to seek bigger military pay raise again

I support the president on the pay raise for the military. During this last war we have lost so many military men and women. What else can we do to let them know we appreciate their dedication to our country. Their lives are so much more important then money but they continue to risk it for the country's causes. They desire more than a 3.1 raise. At least I will know where my tax dollars are going and I feel proud.

How about the government providing everyone with their own personal ATM that never runs dry...that way, when the cost of bread goes up, you can simply withdraw the needed funds from your "COLA machine"--pun intended.
If you're dissatisfied with the annual raise you receive (along with the step increases and incentive awards), perhaps you'd like to try out the private sector for a few years??

It's neither a COLA or raise, as a civil servant under this administration, I consider it COMBAT PAY.

The Annual Pay raise should not be confused with a COLA. They are not the same thing. COLAs are based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and used to adjust the Cost of Living for Retirees, Social Security etc. Active Federal workers are never given a COLA. We get a raise based on an analysis of private sector salaries and then in high salary areas like Baltimore/Washington we get a locality pay adjustment. This pay raise has absolutely nothing to do with the cost of bread, eggs, or any consumer items nor the cost of housing cost, insurance increases etc.. Federal HR office often refer to the pay raise as a COLA because they have no salary code in their computers that refers to the pay raise as a federal pay raise. This ofen confuses employees. Please stop referring to the pay raise as a COLA.

It is a cost of living adjustment, something the gov contracted with us from the start, what this boils down to is saving money at our expense and those retired under CSRS, the reason the military is getting more from the pres is because right now they are doing the dirty work on behalf of him (and some of us) and that makes them (military) more important and thus the greater cost of living, plus it helps to attrack more military recruits....this situation is similiar to the FAA and the air traffic controllers under our great pay-for-performance mad house, these selected employees are front line, they control NAS and can slow down traffic if they want, that costs money to the airlines and indirecly to us and the tax payer, that along with a strong union is the reason why they make so much and have the gov by the balls, bottom line they can control things, they got hands on, can screw with things economically if they wish, get it?.

Well I've got 30 years in now, so given this I think I'll just call in sick tomorrow and watch a good comedy, following day, show up late and take off early, following day, perform a halfway marginal acceptable day because that's how we are envisioned, to all you newbies, believe me when I say that this place has gone to pot within the last 10-15 years.
good luck

How about taxing the allowances the military get. They get a TAX FREE allowance for housing, buy a house and get to deduct the property taxes and interest from their taxable income. What a rip off...................

I agree with Civilian with 31 years. I have written the same in other articles. Many folks misunderstand what the increase in January is. It is and always has been a cost of living increase. As stated by Civilian with 31 years, the military and civilians deal with the same increases in the economy. Pay raises for civilians come in the form of their step increases. Promotions for civilians come in the form of going from one grade to the next. COLAs should not be used to pit one group against another since they are cost of living increases. If the desire is to give the military more, then their pay scales need to be adjusted outside the realm of the COLA in January.

Here we go again! This is NOT a pay raise, but a "COST OF LIVING" pay adjustment. When military members feel the pain of prices on everything going up, so do civilian government employees! The Bush administration should just GIVE the military decent PAY RAISES & not keep pitting military COL against civilian COL each year. The COL is the same for both.

Here we go again. Mr President we realize your appreciation of the American Service person, well at least until the war in Iraq is over. But what we are not seeing is your appreciation of the million or so civil servants providing the support and protection to the infrastructure of the Homeland. You realize too many people have too much time invested in civil service to just quit. Try offering a five and five early out and see how many people take it. But what you don't realize is that many younger people are submitting their resumes elsewhere because they see the writing on the wall.
