Dear Feeling Creepy,
How does the average traveler protect themself, you ask? Actually, you can't. If you think this is bad, ever hear of the PATRIOT ACT?
The Republican zealots are indulging in "payback" for the Clinton years. The neocons are systematically instituting extreme ideas (and people) that present a mortal threat to our basic freedoms as Americans. Specifically, the PATRIOT ACT, TSA ordering private industry to comply with its order/fiats, an Attorney General nominee that has counceled the President that torture of prisoners is not unacceptable, not to mention the appearance of unethical behaviour by the outgoing Attorney General by holding prayer meetings on governemnt property.
Although former President Clinton "bent the truth" about having had some type of sexual encounter in the oval office, I'd rather have a red-light hanging from White House tree's as opposed to America's freedom and liberty.

Man, this makes me feel creepy. How and when was the government authorized to "order" a private industry to turn over customer records when it doesn't involve tax evasion? How does the average traveler protect themself from government harrasment if they have the same name as someone on the no-fly or watch list(s).
I may be stupid, but this just doesn't feel right.
