Return to Article: Some TSP services suspended due to Hurricane Ivan

How long have you people been government employees? You sound like all those talking heads that believe that any President can actually create jobs (without creating a new government agency). Why is the TSP office in New Orleans? Probably the same reason that West Virginia should be renamed "Byrdland". Follow the trail of money from lobbyists and special interests into your Congress members' (both parties are guilty) pockets. This is why the most dangerous person in America is a straight party line voter!

I'm glad you did this story on the TSP being below sea level.
I tried to check my account balance last Wednesday, only to learn that the TSP was shutdown for the hurricane. For several days I had no idea if the TSP people were out drinking in New Orleans on my nest egg, or when it would be back. Finally, on Friday, a message on the TSP site said the accounts would be available on Monday.
Now you would think that an organization responsible for more than one hundred billion dollars would have redundancy in accounting, and would have a second server somewhere in a mountain, or other safe location, and that it would simply be a matter of throwing a swtich to bring a second server on-line.
But then again, this IS the Bush administration who is responsble for letting the contract on a one-hundred BILLION dollar plus program, isn't it.
I guess i better get a bigger mattress, to put all my money into soon.

I bet they keep "Dubya's" pension info in a concrete-lined bunker.

My thanks to the NFC!! They were thinking ahead... not only about employee safety but about us, their customers. Lucky for us that Mr. Amelio and cronies hadn't finished off NFC...yet. If I was cynical, I might imagine that he is counting all the money that might have been "kept for evidence" if the worst had happened ... even a couple of days interest on $135 billion is a lot.

Why would any government operation locate a computer system in a city below sea level? This is not Holland! TSP should move its data center and equipment to a city such as St Louis (west county) where it is safer. If you do this do not locate near the rivers because major flooding will destroy the center but the old records center in St. Louis would be a good choice. Also, why does this service fall under the Agriculture Dept.? This is a totally inappropriate activity for that dept. Maybe this should fall under Social Security, Treasury, or a special government-sponsored corporation.

So much for contingency planning. Did we not learn anything from Y2K preparations?
