Government spending soared as homeland security suddenly became the nation's top priority, and as the United States launched military missions in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Correction: These are not the nation's top priorities! They are George Bush's top priorities! George the third had nothing going for him until 9-11. Then he could increase spending on worthless matters, and generate two wars that were stupid and for which we will pay for a long, long time.
The national priority should be to get rid of Bush and his henchmen that have made the United States look really bad internationally, violated the constitution (Patriot Act), lied to Congress and the public about medical costs and weapons of mass destruction, used guard personnel for a war while regular troops sit in Washington doing nothing military, stopped free trade (steel fiasco and now the limit on Chinese furniture) and destroyed the fiscal base that America had achieved under a liberal! The "conservatives" are the liberals and the liberals have become the conservatives.
Bush's new issue is marriage, which is a state issue. Why is the federal government getting into this area at all? Answer, they have no regard for the constitution and want to buy votes! The courts have fallen into the same frame of mind. The courts should remove the Patriot act and strike down any move for the federal government to get more involved in state issues.

Give me a break. The President can't have it every way. If you want to grow the government you do it on revenue- not on national debt which my young children will be paying for the rest of their lives.
TSA- Homeland Security- Wars in Afganistan and Iraq. I'm surprised that foreign capital is still flowing into America to pay for this. If you have such huge expenses you don't cut your revenue. If America was a person I'd say that it needs to moonlight and earn more revenue. This President continues to overspend on their credit card while cutting their earnings to the bone. Mr. President, don't you think it is time for America to live within its budget?????????

While informative, this article struck me as unprofessional and biased. The author's characterization of President Bush's performance on the budget as "lousy" was inappropriate for a seemingly neutral publication upon which I lean for unbiased information about government matters. I would appreciate a more neutral tone in the future.

So, let me guess, it is not my fault. That would be George talking about his lousy record. He must have forgotten, HE started the fighting in Iraq. He can blame himself for not having balanced budgets, he has reduced taxes on rich people so much there is not enough money in the treasury to pay the bills. That is HIS fault not the so-called war. George will never take the blame, he always points the finger at someone or something else, never HIM. This is the example of a bad leader.

Excuses, excuses: "During his term, the nation has gone from enjoying a $236 billion surplus to confronting a $477 billion deficit. The federal debt has ballooned from $5.7 trillion to $7.1 trillion. And annual nondefense discretionary spending has swollen from $319 billion to $433 billion." This fiscal conservative person does not understand the conserve meaning. It has been proven history in this country, that GOP presidents spend more on themselves and start wars, all while forgetting the domestic front, then blame their troubles on a multiple number of reasons. This group has created a new meaning of lying, and denying growth of wages for the poor and middle class. Excuses, excuses, excuses!
