Return to Article: Homeland Security clears up books, but hiring still frozen

DHS is not going to hire any more Immigration officers!!!
But they are still requiring that the backlog in immigration petitions and applications be reduced to a six-month processing time by October 2005!!!!
With the increased post 9/11 requirements for security checks and the "Zero-tolerance' policy, this is not going to happen with the current size workforce.
The immigration law is the most complex body of law in the U.S. Simply hiring more immigration officers will not affect the backlog until they are completely trained and have gained sufficient experience.
DHS has grossly underestimated the manpower needs for the immigration agencies. The hiring freeze needs to be lifted and the number of immigration officers on the job must be increased, and increased now, in order to achieve the goals set for Homeland Security.
Or have we forgotten the lessons of 9/11 and the "Terrorist Visa incident" of 2002?
