Return to Article: House panels find billions in federal waste

With all the pork this government issues, they have the nerve to prosecute or go after the taxpayer. Billions are spent on project studies which are silly and stupid. What does it matter to me whether the rich have more plants in their yards, sighting just one of their examples? If they want to waste billions let them spend out of their own pockets. This is one reason why we're in trillions of dollars in debt today.

I feel the government's contract with Nextel is wasteful. The General Services Administration has a contract with Nextel for $200 million a year for at least the next three years to provide the government with cellular phone service and, more importantly, two-way radio capabilities.
This will eventually replace the radio communications infrastructure that exists for most of the federal law enforcement agencies across the country. So now the Motorola radio systems that are in place and paid for, are just being ignored for the Nextel technology. The taxpayers have esentially paid for two radio systems.

Two of the biggest areas of waste and abuse that I have observed over the years of federal service are military change of command ceremonies and retirement ceremonies. I have seen hundreds of manhours wasted, military bands on official travel orders to play, high ranking people traveling in just to attend the ceremony and lavish parties for change of command and retirement events, all at the cost to the taxpayers.
If the DOD would trash these two outdated military traditions they could save millions across the military services.

I keep noticing that our government knows there is waste, fraud and abuse. What I have never seen is someone that will do something about it. They just talk and talk and do nothing.
I would guess that they would end up having to fire some of their buddies and they can't do that, their friends are too important to be fired or at least dealt with in a straightforward manner. So taxpayers of the world, just grin and bear it, maybe the contractors will start doing it next. Now there's a great idea.

And you wonder why at the end of the fiscal year you can't get the funds to buy toner and paper?

If Congress cut the self serving (self-enriching) pork barrel spending, it could save $15 billion a year and barely scratch the surface of the waste they create.

This report doesn't surprise me. My personal experience in 28 years of government service has enabled me to witness more instances of waste than I could possibly count. One question that constantly occurs to me, is why doesn't my present employer, DLA, have an effective IG program? In the 10+ years I have worked for DLA, I have never experienced a full blown IG inspection nor have I ever heard of one being conducted at any of DLA's depots. At least an attempt to improve oversight of operations would be a step in the right direction. How about it Admiral Lippert? You have anything to say, Sir?

If they know it is there and they know where it is, why don't they reduce the appropriations? Seems to me that Congress is a waste! The recall should be in Congress not California!
