If we have to pay for the college education of military leaders, why not educate those Americans who have enlisted in the services and who have already acquired a modicum of leadership and management expertise?
It's a waste of time to bring in fresh college grads when there are plenty of enlisted individuals who have the ambition and ability to serve their country in an even higher capacity. Further, I'd wager that these individuals would not leave service just as soon as they 'repay' their education with the minimum active service required.
And I'd challenge any senior NCO to tell me he didn't waste a lot of time explaining the system to, and providing leadership training to young officers just out of college who literally didn't know which end was up! That would not happen if we selected our leadership from within current ranks!

I have followed the news about sexual misconduct allegations with the Air Force Academy with much interest. My daughter is not at the academy, but I am as concerned as the parents of those whose lives have been damaged by all of this. Especially those whose hopes and career plans have been tarnished. I am outraged by the lack of accountability, public trust, and leadership of military officials at the academy in dealing with these issues. Accountability: It is long overdue.

Military academies are obsolete and should be eliminated (they should go A-76). It would be better and cheaper for the US tax payer to fund the education of individuals at public universities with ROTC programs to obtain all officers. The academies were created when there was a shortage of universities to provide for officers in a draft situation. Now these guys are choosing to be military and they should be recruited from public universities were they get a small payment in their junior and senior years to cover books and tuition but nothing else. Why should we pay to educate guys that choose military - we don't pay guys that choose business! The US tax payer should not subsidize the education of military - they are no different than anyone else.
