For many of us who entered federal service in the class of the '70s, civil service employment offered greater ideals than those of private industry. While salaries were lower than what we could get with such companies as IBM and Bell Telephone companies, we chose federal service for the sense of stability, and the pride of contributing to the greatness of our country. Our college counselors and family friends advised us to "get a good government job" and we gladly accepted the job offers. The "noncost factors" referred to in the article have been demonstrated by the majority of us who have worked hard, with no incentive other than loyalty to our agencies. It went beyond working for a particular supervisor. There has been a true connection with the mission of the agency that has driven us to excellence. How do you cost such intangibles?? Whatever the outcome, I have no regrets over choosing to work for "Uncle Sam".
