My experience in Vietnam was probably typical; we thought we had the most modern equipment and tactics to deal with the VC/NVA. There is no comparison with what the troops now have at their fingertips, we might have better luck with precision guided weapons, fast all terrain AMTRACs, Abrams Tanks & Bradley personnel carriers. I have noticed that the 'Old' CH-46 Helicopters seem to be doing pretty well, I remember when those 'copters broke in two in '67. Caused quiet a bit of concern then, as usual the Boeing people came up with a fix very soon. That's what happens when a country learns how to keep on going to better equipment, as we will have with the OV-22 when it's ready.

You missed one other critical element. The Vietcong were a tough, disciplined and ideologically motivated fighting force that had the support of a significant number of the Vietnamese people. The Republican Guard, to paraphrase Harry Truman, couldn't fight its way out of a whorehouse. All they seemed to be good at was beating up on women, children and old people.
