The Economy Act passed in the 1920's needs to be honored. Less government Right? The military is busy enough policing the world anyways. There are at least a dozen different modern platforms around the world that are currently being used or would be viable for the firefighting mission. The technology is out there, the experience lies with the fine civilian pilots and mechanics of the Few remaining companies who have been doing this for a long time, way more I believe then the military could offer. What the industry needs is a honest to god contract from the USFS. Not one that could be cancelld at any time. If we had something like that we could take it to the bank for funding on a purpose built, or modifying an existing platform. The current contracting process is not working. Its that simple.....

Use the Army National Guard and Air Guard! They have the assets and the personel for the job and can do the job much more efficently than civilian contractors. They also have an outstanding maintaince program and full time federal civilian mechanics. The turnover rate in the guard is much lower than active duty and many guard aircrew are already very experienced at fighting wildland fires. Wildland fires should be treated like tornados, floods, hurricanes and other natural disasters that destroy private property and public resources and not contracted out to civilans using inefficent and dangerous WW2 relics. Disaster relief is a major part of the National Guards mission, it makes no sense to subsidize an ageing fleet of civilian aircraft to the the job that can easily be done with existing federal and state assets.

I am very interested in your idea of contracting out the airtankers to private companies so the Industry could have control of the equipment(aircraft to be maintained and inspected by Civilian mechanics working for the contractors with oversight by the FAA. I used to work on KC-135 used for Refueling and also we did low level with the B-1. In Vietnam I worked on C-123s that sprayed Agent Orange so I have a good background in tankers, plus both jet and recip experience. I have been with American for 16 years and would like to use my knowledge else where. If you might have a place for me I would enjoy putting together a program with civilian control. The military flies safe aircraft but their turnover is high where as a company with permanent mechanics would make a stronger more knowledgeable team.
