Aug. 1
The August issue of our print magazine is devoted to the government's ambitious -- and often unheralded -- efforts to go green. In this online supplement to the issue, we take you inside some of those initiatives with a photo tour of a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration satellite operations facility in Maryland that is so green its rooftop blends right into the hillside, and an interactive map of federal facilities that are models of energy efficiency. We also give you a chance to test your knowledge of renewable energy sources and to learn more about award-winning environmental projects. Should you be inspired by what you see, you might be interested in our list of additional online resources.

  • The British Academy of Science has run a 500 year comparison of Earth temperatures and the magnetic storms on our sun and has found a near-perfect correlation. No one can deny that climate change is occurring. And no one can prove that it is being caused by greenhouse gasses. Even the person who came up with the theory reqdily admitted that it couldn't be proven. I'm all for conservation of natural resources and ending our addiction to the fossil fuels that are practically the only thing of value in the Mideast. But to destroy our industrial base or jeopordize our place in the world in the name of curtailling greenhouse gasses makes no sense whatsoever.
  • I agree that it is a farce. It is the "politically correct" thing to do. It is not just 200 fringe scientists. There are other scientist and professional meteorologists who discount the whole idea as well. It goes back to "figures lie and liars figure." The methods of gathering the data are very suspect and unreliable if held to scrutiny. Global Warming is possibly taking place (even the method of determining that is questionable), but if it is, it is a cyclical thing. The earth was warmer around the first millenium (around 1000 to 1100 AD) than it is now. There were no factories or cars then. So, what made it warmer back then? The earth has actually cooled over the last couple of years. Again, they want to avoid scrutiny so they just look at segments of data that support the theory (it is ONLY a theory, at this point) and ignore anything that refutes their hypothesis. It is much more about hysteria, hype and political correctness than it is about facts. However, I am all FOR conservation. Polution is real. Wasting our resources is bad. It is only oil that gives the Middle East any value. I am FOR new technology and getting rid of things that use oil based fuel. My reasons are not because of "global warming" but because of common sense.
  • We don't need global warming as an excuse to stop burning through our fossil fuel resources like there's no tomorrow and trashing the planet in general....who cares whether it's real or not, let's do what makes sense.
