An Ambitious Agenda: Defense and Data Center Consolidation

All government agencies are tasked with an unfunded mandate to consolidate data centers, but the Department of Defense (DoD) faces the biggest challenge: out of the federal government’s 3122 data centers, the DoD owns more than 772, or 25 percent. Some of these data centers use less than two percent of their server capacity and very few are reused internally or across agencies when no longer needed. Though some progress has been made to merge or eliminate under-utilized centers, the DoD has set ambitious goals have been set for the near future.
