Helping New York

The costs associated with the terrorist attacks in New York mounted in a variety of response and recovery activities. Here's a sampling of the projects FEMA funded:

Search and Rescue
$295.4 million for police overtime.
$105.6 million for fire department overtime.
$56 million for DNA testing, forensic analysis, equipment and other tools for victim identification.

Transportation
$2.75 billion to revamp lower Manhattan's transportation infrastructure.
$33 million for emergency ferry service.

Cleanup
$437 million for debris removal.
$80 million for indoor residential cleaning.
$10 million for exterior building cleaning.

City Services
$8 million to New York City to pay for canceled Sept. 11 primary election.
$716,000 to New York City public schools for textbooks.
