Giving Life to Old Documents

The latest version of OmniPage Pro from Peabody, Mass., software developer ScanSoft Inc. gives new life to old documents. OmniPage Pro 11 is an optical character recognition software program that converts images produced by scanners into text that can be edited.

After Pro 11 converts the image of a paper document into an electronic file, the software proofs the document to ensure it has captured every word correctly. ScanSoft says OmniPage is now more than 99 percent accurate. When the program finds a word it doesn't recognize, it prompts the user to double-check its work.

Pro 11 enables users to save scanned hard-copy documents in PDF formats. PDF files typically are viewed on the Internet with the widely used Acrobat Reader from Adobe Systems Inc.

Pro 11 also makes PDF files more useful. PDF files are read-only documents, but OmniPage Pro enables users to open them online and modify them while keeping all formatting intact.

Don't worry if you need to scan documents written in foreign languages. Pro 11 now recognizes 114 languages. And, it can read back the contents of scanned documents in 14 languages over your computer's speakers.
