Roping in Police

Government Executive March 16, 2004

Introduced in July by Rep. Charlie Norwood, R-Ga., the Clear Law Enforcement and Alien Removal Act would:

  • Confirm that state and local police officers are authorized to investigate, apprehend, and remove immigrants in the United States.
  • Deny federal funding for detaining immigrants to states that do not pass legislation permitting their officers to enforce immigration laws.
  • Require that illegal immigrants pay fines and forfeit property to state and local police departments.
  • Add the names of illegal immigrants to the National Crime Information Center database, the system police use to check for arrest warrants.
