University of California agrees to Los Alamos fine
The U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration and the University of California have agreed that the university should pay a $2.8 million fine to address a widely publicized security lapse at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, the agency announced Monday.
The fine stemmed from last year's discovery of classified nuclear weapons documents at the home of a laboratory contract worker. The federal government initially levied a $3 million penalty against the university.
In agreeing to the fine, the university accepted responsibility for the lapse which happened shortly before the school lost its laboratory management contract.
COMMENTS
- Good! However, it doesn't seem enough to really make an effect on them and other contractors to improve performance. The Univesity of California and the Federal Government together have failed the citizens of New Mexico and the citizens of the United States at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL)in environmental protection. Reason: the Federal Government has better and more lawyers than the State of New Mexico. LANL pollutes and gets away with it. True but nearly impossible to win a case against them.
