Senate confirms Gates as new Defense secretary
The Senate voted Wednesday to confirm former CIA Director Robert Gates as Defense secretary, ending Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld's second tenure heading the Pentagon with a 95-2 vote.
President Bush nominated Gates to replace Rumsfeld, who also held the job under former President Gerald Ford, last month.
Defeated Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., and Sen. Jim Bunning, R-Ky., voted against Gates.
COMMENTS
- One of the Pentagon’s greatest faults of Rumsfeld was that he ignored his senior military advisers. Guess why! The senior military advisers are totally incompetent! Management throughout the Defense Department and the services is bad or nonexistent! The only way to solve the problems is either to ignore them or get them out. Rummy tried both and that is a large part of the reason we have NSPS. While I do not believe it will accomplish anything, Rummy did! Rummy was a manager - Gates is a government hack. Time will tell but I bet Gates does nothing to improve the military to fight today’s battles. He will rebuild the World War II force as the military generals and admirals want! He will be supported by the military industrial complex that has gained complete control of the military and Congress concerning appropriations. Luckily we are not at the point of building more cross bows and suits of armor, but we are not far from it. Taxpayer Posted December 8, 2006 6:55 AM
