A Navy official on Wednesday revealed more details about the schedule for awarding a contract to replace the service's massive enterprise network, but concerns about the transparency of the procurement process linger.

- I'm not sure where you got your information, but unfortunately MC was not able to opt out of NMCI early on. We are stuck with it just as the Navy is. However, I do agree with most of your comments. Barbara Bullard Posted October 22, 2008 5:35 PM
- "It's possible they are doing a tap dance, because they don't have anything more substantive they can say with no decisions made." That about sums up the rape of the taxpayer re NMCI too. As a systems administrator in the Navy during the transition to NMCI; what a total screwed up waste of government resources! NMCI had to be a pet project that made some retired Admiral(s) wealthy individuals on the backs of the taxpayer. This replacement effort should be held in abeyance pending review and recommendation of the incoming administration. God willing we will have someone with some common sense to better evaluate and execute such a responsibility; which by the way should qualify as inherently governmental responsibility, vice a private industry cash cow. A military service significant automated communication network completely controlled and maintained by private industry; with minimal government oversight. I am not aware of any user of NMCI that didn't avoid it if possible and/or complain about its functionality. As I understand, the MC participant of NMCI bailed out of required use of the system very early on in the implementation. Considering the not so flattering jokes about "jarheads"; they were smart enough to recognize early into NMCI that it was a SNAFU! NMCI: a private industry dream that has made some (likely Navy retiree(s)) wealthy private citizens somewhere; oh and it likely increased government spending financing the agency which evolved into being responsible for oversight/management of the new program also. From the inside out, as a NMCI system user: What a waste! 25+ yr DoD Employee Posted October 21, 2008 7:39 AM
