President recognizes hundreds of top-performing executives
More than 300 career federal executives have been selected as recipients of a prestigious presidential award recognizing stellar leadership and long-term accomplishments.
The 333 executives and senior professionals selected for the 2007 Presidential Rank Awards came from 31 different agencies. They will receive sizable bonuses in honor of their achievements.
"Recipients of this award are dedicated to delivering results, and their service is advancing President Bush's agenda for improving the management and performance of the federal government," said Linda Springer, director of the Office of Personnel Management, in a statement announcing the winners.
The 50 senior officials in the elite category of Distinguished Executive will get awards worth 35 percent of their basic pay. This translates into bonuses of more than $39,000, since the minimum basic pay for Senior Executive Service employees at most agencies this year is $111,676.
The 283 winners of the Meritorious Executive awards will earn bonuses worth 20 percent of their basic pay, amounting to more than $22,000 for most recipients.
The Defense Department and military services had an especially strong showing, with 16 Distinguished Executives and 71 Meritorious Executives.
To win a Presidential Rank Award, employees must be nominated by the head of their agency, evaluated by groups of private citizens and approved by the president. Up to 1 percent of about 8,000 eligible employees can win the honor of Distinguished Executive, and up to 5 percent can earn a Meritorious Executive award.

COMMENTS
- Do you ever wonder who some of these people really are and if they are actually legitimate? The last couple of these posts always finish with a comment like this. Makes me wonder if management has hired a couple of flunkies to post positive statements. Take this Jim Pasquale, who is supportive of these big checks to only a few and says "I personally know one of the recipients" but doesn't say which one. Jim there are a lot of government people who work that hard and long who never get any extra pay or bonuses. I say if the person is working extra hours and is worthy of more money, then the givernment should be paying them up front and that means all of them not just a few executives. Again this kind of thing only defines pay differences and rewards for only those at the top. SATOS Posted October 4, 2007 9:55 AM
- Where's John Stossel? Gimme a break from your sour grapes! I personally know one of the recipients, and he works from 7am until 8pm almost every day. Despite being in FERS, he hasn't taken a sick day in 20 years. The extraordinary dedication and committment of most of our SES can never be compensated fairly, and a paltry 20% bonus for the top 5% translates into less than these highly effective public servants could make at Walmart for the extra time and effort they put into making your jobs farther down the food chain that much more tolerable and meaningful. Would you trade your child's soccer games, family dinners, and most of your free time for an SES's stress level, a measly 20% bonus and the scorn of people like you who just can't see the big picture? Doubt it. But keep complaining, that'll help your career! Gimme a break. Jim Pasquale Posted October 4, 2007 8:50 AM
- People need to remember that many government employees work for much less than private industry pays for people with the same responsibilities. I have been trying for 25 yrs. to get up to a Mgmt. position and it is always "who you know" not what you do. I do feel the SES is a cushy billet being protected by who the SES wants to be the next SES. I agree with the first comment that we have a huge budget deficit now and a war going on and need to quit the bonuses. If I can't be awarded and promoted for doing above and beyond my job why should anyone else... let's be fair here. MH Posted October 3, 2007 2:56 PM
