Local Y2K readiness uncertain

Local communities' levels of readiness to handle Y2K problems remain uncertain, John Koskinen, chairman of the President's Council on Year 2000 Conversion, said today.
Koskinen joined representatives from police and fire protection organizations at a news conference to share results from a July 7 council- sponsored roundtable meeting.
Among its conclusions, the group said that many public safety officials may be called upon in multiple capacities in the face of a Y2K problem.
"In many local communities, people who are an important part of public safety efforts volunteer their services in more than one area," he said. "Good preparation would involve knowing how best to allocate these personnel if there were competing demands for their expertise," he added.
Koskinen estimated that close to 75 percent of counties across the nation will be prepared for Y2K problems through either compliance or contingency plans.
