TSA deputy announces resignation

Stephen McHale plans to resign the No. 2 post at the Transportation Security Administration later this month.

McHale has served as deputy administrator since January 2002, with responsibility for overseeing the federalization of aviation security. According to a TSA statement released Tuesday, McHale plans to seek opportunities in the private sector after taking the summer off to spend time with his family.

TSA Chief of Staff Carol DiBattiste will take over McHale's duties.

"I am immensely proud of this organization and what we have accomplished," McHale said, adding that TSA employees have done "phenomenal work" to bolster aviation security since the agency's inception more than two years ago.

  • The Bush administration at its best. Everything screwed up and the boss never taking responsibility for his actions. Situation normal, all fouled up.
  • What a surprise, another top Homeland Security official resigning. There is something very wrong with a new agency that cannot recruit the "best and the brightest" for its managers, and also can't keep those it has! Let's look at the long and distinguished list of ex-DHS managers. First there was Deputy Secretary Gordon England, who returned to the Navy after only a few months in office; Paul Redmond, the head of Information Analysis & Infrastructure Protection (IAIP); Bruce Lawlor, Secretary Ridge's Chief of Staff; Bruce Carnes, Chief Financial Officer; Michael Dougherty, ICE Director of Operations; Anthony Tangeman, Director, Office of Detention & Removal (DRO), etc. The list goes on and on! This is yet another major problem with this agency, in addition to lousy administrative systems, budget problems, turf battles with the FBI, and terrible employee morale, to name a few others. When are Congress and the American public going to wake up to the fact that the emperor (DHS) has no clothes, and demand immediate corrective action, before it is too late??!!
