From Nextgov.com: FBI partially blames procurement rules for fake IT products
The government's entrenched policies for buying information technology is a major primary cause for many agencies installing fake Cisco network gear into their networks, which leads to the possibility of systems failing or the loss of sensitive data, according to the FBI.

- Dan, Actually people were arrested. The press release can be found through DOJ website. Most of the seized counterfeit stuff was seized by CBP and ICE. ICE had numerous investigations inside the overall investigation. I view the criminal case as well done. Potential computer system weakness and ascertaining the scope of the problem is actually beyond what any of the 4 federal law enforcement agencies involved are set up to due. Maybe GSA or GAO need to take a look how contracting officers who go above the low bid are beaten up for it. Jim Kaley Posted May 19, 2008 9:39 PM
- The IT problem is systemic and can be directly attributed to the fact that IT procurement adheres to a status quo of standards that are in constant need of patching. The system was never designed with security in mind. To make the sytemic changes neccessary is beyond the capability of in-house IT personnel. When any innovation is presented it is automatically given to the third party outside vendor ,who is already providing the technology which is vulnerable. Is there any wonder why the system does not work? Is there any wonder why the number of breaches is going up faster than politicains promises???? Frederick Scheffler Posted May 13, 2008 11:15 PM
