Senate endorses civilian pay hike, too
The Senate Wednesday endorsed a resolution calling for a 4.8 percent pay raise for federal civilian personnel in 2000.
The resolution, introduced by Sen. Paul S. Sarbanes, D-Md., was passed as an amendment to a bill on military pay and retirement reform (S. 4). The resolution would match civilian pay raises with the military pay increase proposed in S. 4.
The Clinton administration proposed a 4.4 percent pay raise for both military and civilian personnel in its fiscal 2000 budget.
"The men and women who serve our nation, whether it's at Fort Meade or [the National Institutes of Health], need to know that they will be compensated equitably," said Sen. Barbara Mikulski, D-Md. Mikulski cosponsored the resolution, along with Sen. Chuck Robb, D-Va.
