Obama budget to seek $7 billion for nuclear stockpile
The Obama administration's fiscal 2011 budget request to Congress Monday will include $7 billion to maintain the nation's nuclear weapons complex, and for related purposes, Vice President Biden revealed Friday in an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal.
The request marks a $600 million increase over fiscal 2010 funding. Over the next five years, Biden wrote, the Obama administration intends to boost funding in this area by more than $5 billion. "Even in a time of tough budget decisions, these are investments we must make for our security," he wrote.
The added funding will help strengthen the United States' ability to recruit, train and retain skilled people, support the work of nuclear labs, and clean up and close down facilities that are no longer needed, the column said. The request comes as the Pentagon is completing its Nuclear Posture Review, which will be released March 1.
Meanwhile, the United States and Russia are weeks away from concluding a nuclear arms reduction deal to succeed the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, a 1991 pact that expired Dec. 5.

- I do not know how much it takes (costs) to stockpile nuclear materials and to store spent fuel, but I know we need to provide for building nuclear reactors to generate power for our national consumption to replace oil imports from rogue nations to stop the outflow of our money and to achieve energy independence for national security. France is practically 80% nuclear in energy so why can we not ?? I say we cut this monstrosity of a Budget down to size (based on the last Bush budget and add for inflation only!!!) Peel away all tax increases hidden in the monster and stop all the class envy stuff build into the budget!!! Let the american system of free enterprise flower and bloom and not let socialistic/communistic ideology drag us and our economy down !!! We should not encourage dependence on government dole-outs nor allow entitlement mindsets to flourish !!! claro chen Posted February 7, 2010 10:12 PM
- The amount of $7 billion for nuclear stockpile appears to be excess at this time. With the existing resources and with new stockpiling, I suggest that $7, should be cut to $3.5 billion. Yes - money is needed for this nuclear stockpile at this time. Do we know the details that will really have all the data and preparations needed. Hal Col Hal Phelan Posted February 1, 2010 1:14 PM
- How hypocritical are we?!? We tell other countries "no, you can't have nuclear weapons," while in the same breath we want to jack up how much money WE spend on OUR nuclear weapons! I'm all for doing research & cleaning up the nuclear power plants & what-not, but if we're telling other countries to reduce or not have nuclear weapons, we should be doing the same. marika Posted February 1, 2010 11:58 AM
