Rules change allows bigger SES bonuses

The Office of Personnel Management last week issued a regulatory change allowing bigger bonuses for federal executives.

Under the change, published in the Dec. 29 Federal Register, the pool of money available to agencies for Senior Executive Service (SES) performance awards is the greater of either 10 percent of the agency's total SES basic pay budget or 20 percent of the average SES salary.

Previously, the limits were 3 percent of an agency's total SES basic pay budget or 15 percent of the average SES basic salary in an agency.

The change actually took effect Oct. 21, 1998, with passage of the fiscal 1999 omnibus appropriations act, but OPM had not yet made the change to its regulations.

In 2000, basic SES pay ranges from $106,200 to $122,400.
