Deutch Denies Clearance Appeal

Outgoing CIA Director John Deutch upheld yesterday the decision made by a panel he appointed to withold security clearance from a prominent State Department official who gave classified information about CIA covert operations to Rep. Robert Torricelli, D-N.J. Torricelli then made the information public.

State official and former Cuba policy coordinator for the White House Richard Nuccio had his security clearance revoked in September by the CIA. Deutch appointed a three-member panel to review the decision. The panel upheld the revocation.

Deutch said Nuccio could reapply for his security clearance in a year. New CIA Director Anthony Lake, who worked with Nuccio during his time at the White House, would make the decision whether to reinstate his clearance at that time.
